Ipas Ethiopia Launches a Seven-year Project Fully Funded by the Global Affairs Canada (GAC)

Ipas Ethiopia successfully launched the project, it has been working on for the past several months. It was an incredible event filled with inspiring discussions, and a shared vision for the future.

The project entitled “improving Access to Reproductive Health Information and Services to the communities in five regions of Ethiopia” and funded with approximately 14.5 million Canadian dollars (around 1.28 billion Ethiopian Birr), will be implemented in five regions of Ethiopia over the next seven years.

With rising concerns surrounding SRH, we must act decisively to inform and serve communities across five under-served regional states: Amhara, Central Ethiopia, Oromia, Tigray, and Benishangul-Gumuz.” Noted our country Director Dr. Demeke Desta, who welcomed guests to the event.

His excellency Dr. Dereje Duguma state minister of the ministry of health and the Canadian ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti  His excellency Joshua Tabah were among those who graced the event. Dr. Dereje emphasized on the progress that have been made in the SRH sector in Ethiopia while highlighting on persistent challenges and the need for stronger collaboration. The ambassador in his turn asserted the Canadian government’s commitment in supporting sexual and reproductive health and empowering women with the health information and services.

Fully funded by Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada (GAC) to be implemented from June 1st, 2024, to May 31st 2031, this initiative, seeks to address critical gaps in SRH information, access, and services, ultimately empowering women, girls and communities at large to make informed decisions about their health.

With certain group of individuals including rural women and young people, people with disabilities, migrant women working in factories and sexual and gender-based violence (SGVV) survivors as the main targets, the project will reach 1.13 million women and girls with comprehensive abortion care (CAC) and contraceptive care (CC) services, 5.5 million community members with indirect benefits and 2,450 health workers with capacity building, and 450,000 community members with SRH education and linkage with health facilities for services.

The Ministry of Health, regional health bureaus, and local CSOs will be the main Stakeholders in the implementation of this project to ensure inclusive and sustainable SRH interventions.
